Battery 223
Located on the beach at Cape May State Park

Built just before WWII in 1942 and was covered by earth, sand,
and sod. Worked in conjunction with batteries at Lewes,
Delaware to control the entrance to Delaware Bay from
enemy ships with its terret guns.

The Hotel was built in 1876 by Civil War Colonel Henry Sawyer
and was originally planned as a boarding house.
Sawyer’s Chalfonte underwent most of its expansion
between 1876 and 1909, and the present footprint is much
as it was in 1909.

Marshallville School

This small, one-room schoolhouse was probably erected
around 1850 and is typical of the schools built in the first half
of the 19th century throughout America, having little architectural
establishment and a simple floor plan.  It originally served
the children in Marshallville, a small town formed around a
glass window factory that operated there from 1814 to the
late 1800s.

Fishing Creek Schoolhouse

Built in 1888 on land that was donated from the Matthews
family farm. Many of those who aided in the construction
of the one-room schoolhouse were veterans of the Civil War.
The Fishing Creek School served as the only school in the
area until 1921 when some students were sent to the
Cold Spring Academy.

Ocean City Tenth Street Station

The station was built in 1898 by the Ocean City Railroad,
which was acquired by the Atlantic City Railroad in 1901,
and later by the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines.
Trains last served the station in August 1981, when service
was cancelled due to poor track conditions and limited
funding from the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
Tenth Street Station was added to the National Register of
Historic Places on June 22, 1984. It is now known as the
Ocean City Transportation Center.

Jonathan Pyne House

Built 1694. Area was settled by Europeans from Massachusetts
and Long Island (fishermen and whalers) so this is one of
the oldest buildings in the New Jersey.

 

Rio Grande Station

The station was built in 1894 by the West Jersey Railroad in
nearby Rio Grande, New Jersey. Subsequently the station
served passengers on the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore
Lines. The Rio Grande Station was donated to Cold Spring
Village, a history museum in Lower Township, and it was
moved to the museum site in 1975. It now operates as a
seasonal heritage railroad station for the Cape May
Seashore Lines. The station was added to the National
Register of Historic Places on February 13, 2007.

 

St Peter's by the Sea Episcopal Church

It was originally built for Philadelphia's 1876 Centennial Exhibition,
then moved to Cape May Point in 1879. The church has been
moved four times since, first to get a cooler location closer
to the shore, then, as the shoreline retreated, to safer locations
away from the shore. It is now near the original site, and much
closer to the shore.

This was a US Navy Torpedo plane in WWII. It is one of 7
airplanes on the NRHP.

 

Tuckahoe Train Station

The Tuckahoe Train Station was built in 1894, once a stop
between Philadephia and Cape May, it was added to the
National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

 

William S Townsend House

The house was built in 1811 and added to the National
Register of Historic Places on April 5, 1984. The house
was the home of William S. Townsend, a prominent merchant,
farmer, and community leader in Dennisville. The house is
part of a well-preserved complex, which includes several
outbuildings.

 

US Life-Saving Station No. 35

hand made by locals.
